Third Juror confirmed for GEISAI#19!
We have just confirmed that Gabriel Ritter, the Nancy and Tim Hanley Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at the Dallas Museum of Art, will be participating as a juror at GEISAI#19.

Ritter began work as the DMA’s Nancy and Tim Hanley Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art on May 14, 2012. His first curatorial effort was a Cindy Sherman Exhibition in 2013. (http://www.dma.org/art/exhibition-archive/cindy-sherman).

He was also the lead curator for “DallasSTTES: Charting Contemporary Art, 1963 to Present,” a 2013 exhibition celebrating the history of North Texas’s bold and distinctive art scene.

In the near future, the DMA will hold a series of “Concentrations” featuring the following artists, Stephen lapthisophon, Slavs and Tatars, and Chosil Kil. In 2015, DMA will cooperate with the Japan Foundation to hold an exhibition of work by Kazuo Shiraga and Sadamasa Motonaga in Tokyo.

He has worked internationally in museums and has served as an independent curator, organizing exhibitions of emerging artists from around the world.
Ritter has also written numerous scholarly papers and contributed to many major publications, including essays for monographs on the artists Makoto Aida and Koki Tanaka.
Ritter most recently organized “Sculpture by Other Means”, currently on view at the ONE AND J. Gallery in Seoul, Korea, featuring work by Masaya Chiba, Teppei Kaneuji, Yuki Kimura, and Koki Tanaka.

Ritter is currently completing his Ph.D. in Art History at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he also earned his masters of art history, and is completing a doctoral Fellowship at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. His dissertation, Noboru Kitawaki and Surrealism in Japan, 1930-1951, explores Kitawaki’s involvement with surrealism in Japan during the 1930s and 40s.
Previously a Curatorial Assistant at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA) for three years, Ritter organized “Out of the Ordinary: “New Video from Japan” and “MOCA Focus: Karl Haendel,” the first solo museum exhibition and publication dedicated to the artist.

Gabriel Ritter’s profile shows him to be a serious student of Japanese Art, specifically modern and contemporary Art, and he has curated a lot of exhibitions as well as written numerous dissertations on the subject.

The Mori Art Museum 30th Anniversary Exhibition, “Out of Doubt – in a minute,” to which he contributed, is scheduled to be held the day before GEISAI#19. He is truly a well known curator of rising importance.
